Brooklyn by Colm Toibin

Looking for a story that will have you reaching for the tissues? Read me!

I ordered this novel after seeing the film and falling in love with the story.

Set in Colm Toibin childhood home, Enniscorthy, a small town in the south east of Ireland during the 1950s job shortage.

Toibin’s main character, Eilis, is stuck at home with her widower mother and sister. With few opportunities in the little village, Eilis leaves the security of her family to travel to Brooklyn NY in the search for a better job.

This book will reminded you of the scary and exhilarating feeling you get when striking out on a new, unknown venture. Carving out a new life, a new love, a community and a routine with none of the familiar close at hand. The novel pushes forward over Eilis’ first year in the USA as she starts to lay her own foundations for her future.

This is a story about growing up, sacrifice and living with the decisions you make. For all ages who like a quiet heroine and a love story.
